Teacher Shirts

Never in a million years would I have dreamed that I love my class so much already! Sometimes in the thick of life and everything else we lose sight of how awesome our jobs are.  I literally think while at work, "I have the most awesome job in the world." It makes me smile to say that, to feel that way about a career.

I'm so proud of my job and students that I wanted to show it off and if you never have heard of Teacher Shirts then you are missing out! I went browsing for Kindergarten ones because this grade level really seems to fit...something I never thought I would say....but I truly am!   I found so many awesome shirts for teachers or for family members even!

Did I mention he's a model?!

I saw the "Real Men Marry Kindergarten Teachers" and was in LOVE! Perfect for my husband!  It's so soft and comfy but enough to stay warm...well for the Minnesota fall at least.  We both love it!

Real Men Marry Kindergarten Teachers
The whole Kindergarten section really rocked! They reference the "Keep Calm because Kindergarten Rocks." They have shirts with rhinestones and fun artwork, and even one after my own heart....
I Love My Job Kindergarten Teacher

Kindergarten Writing Center

So since starting my version of daily 5, work on writing has been one of my students favorite places to go.  In my classroom, there are still assigned where they go but do get some decision in what they do there.  I know this may not seem traditional as far as writing centers go but we do get plenty of other chances to write as a whole group and working on concepts so this fits perfectly for the beginning of the kindergarten year.

It's so popular my students choose to do these during their free choice time!  Free choice and they choose writing....it's that good!

To start, currently I have 5 options for writing - all housed on one shelf near our art center (but serves for writing station as well!)

Here is a picture of what the shelf look like.

Housed on the shelf are a container of dry erase markers and a few erasers (we share between 2 people) and some word ring cards .  Get them for free by clicking the link.  They have sight words that are common and lists for every season/event throughout the year!

Here are our 4 dry erase binders each with a different focus!  I'll walk you through each one and then address what else you can do in writing.

Perfect for my higher kiddos that can work on some concepts that are traditionally forgotten but are definitely important for the younger elementary. This book has practice pages for name, address, phone number, date, etc.... all with examples of how to write.  You write them in fun ways like tall, small, or rainbow! Here are some examples:

If you want your own copy, click any of the pictures above
2. Letter ID and writing binder

Get it for free using the link above, inside are pages where we can find the letter and pages with practicing writing and finding!  Another fantastic resources and very popular!

3. Letter Tracing Book = another freebie from a great blogger over at Kindergarten Smorgasboard

Pretty self explanatory - you can trace the letters which some of my students choose to do otherwise you can use the marker and practice writing them.  Sometimes they work in pairs and one does the capital and the other does the lowercase letter. Here's a look at the inside:

4.  Number Writing practice has two options.  Both involve different writing options check them out below.

I love how you can represent the number so many different ways for practice! Also in the binder are these sheets:

Writing the number work and writing sentences - these are at the end because it will take us a little bit to work up to this level.

5.  The fifth option is to use our personal name sheets  to practice our names our writing sentences, sight words, or words on the rings you saw above. I have had some students that like this option because they can do what they want and as long as they are writing it works for me!

Any other writing center ideas for Kindergarten I should know about?

What's going on?

I have been making some stuff finally for my classroom! I have got some routine down and we are starting to really learn some things!  I wanted to show you some things in case you are in the same boat! Make sure to stay tuned all the way to the bottom! ;)

First - I created ABC aerobics for us to learn more about our alphabet and really the sounds that go with each letter!  It has been super helpful and not to mention really fun and engaging - we rock this every morning! We do the alphabet, sound, and action every day to get up and moving!

Also, I made some name tags because I couldn't find any that I really liked especially for younger grades, that didn't overwhelm you with information.  I wanted the name to stand out but it also to have some help!

They come in tons of patterns and include the alphabet (with vowels highlighted), number line (to 20), 7 color words, and the left and right signs.  Perfect for any classroom, everyone can have one they like and they match any color scheme.

Last, we do AIMSweb testing and nonsense words become important in kindergarten to show use of letter sounds and blending skills.  Even this early in the year I can see I have another group that loves to use cars!! Driving, playing, anything, so I created:

It has 3 different game versions that can be used as a center, station, or RtI game! This will definitely get my students excited about learning the nonsense words! Just another way we can get moving and learning in class.

Click on the pictures for any more information! Since you've been reading this far...pin any of the images buy tomorrow and I'll pick a winner to win one of them from my store ;)

Door Decor

Just popping in for a quick decorating idea.  If you are like my and completely intimidated by all the other cute doors the teachers whipped up....I had to do something.  Here is my something below! They had all summer to work and I only had a week and a half in my classroom before school started, but I'll take what I can get!

A little background, our school's PBIS is "Connect for Success," many others were doing cute puzzle piece things as it is prominent in the school.  I wanted to be similar but give the students a chance to show off their creativitiy! I blew up the blank piece below and gave each student the opportunity to show off their coloring skills on the very first day of kindergarten.  I explained how we all fit together to make the class work better!

I made the words have a puzzle piece theme too!

I wrote the names on first and we discussed how to color, using an anchor chart like Deedee does, showing how we color inside the lines, with the right colors, and leave no white space.

For the first time, I think it turned out pretty cute! Quick and easy that the students have a huge part in AND it connects to school theme.

What are your door decor ideas?

Sight Word Song

I know I haven't been blogging lately but it has been crazy back to school, but at least you get lots of freebies...that makes it a little better right? :/

Today is no different.  We sing a sight word song when we introduce a word to the class that we will be focusing on.  Its a simple tune but it gets the job done.  I don't know who came up with this song but I couldn't find the lyrics anywhere so I made my own! I didn't write it just couldn't find the words!  I love using songs and it keeps us focused on the carpet.

Click the picture to get the download!

I keep my sight words on magnets for the front board and they stay in a special box.  Another copy goes on our word wall.  I also use them as a password when we leave the room or while we have time in the hall.  We find them frequently in books from our reading series and we learn to write them.   I try to focus on them whenever possible because they should be words that should be easily recognized...at least by the end of the year.

What else do you do with sight words? I would love to get more ideas as well.

September!

I'm loving my new place where I get to try new recipe except the fact that it is SO addicting :(   I should also be loving the fact that we finally got an air conditioner in our new place!!! We've had some pretty hot days and we are very thankful :)

I'm really wanting payday since this is my first year at this school it doesn't come till mid September and I will be celebrating :)

Sadly, I'm definitely needing some allergy meds, Labor Day is the worst for me every single year! Staying inside with AC helps, but I'm pretty useless.

My goals for this month:
1. Build classroom community more- I have some ideas but I want some more interactive ones we can use daily. I really want us to be a really strong class together and value everyone before we get too far into the year.

2.  I need to stay connected to friends and family.  Since I moved away I need to make sure and Skype them when I can.  I really need to work on meeting more people here but none are my age...

3. I need to workout- no excuses- I've been extremely lazy.

Also...if you want to check out my apps with kindergarteners don't forget the FREEBIE that comes with it!
