Look what we did today!

Story Elements!

We started out with this super fun HIP HOP video!  Yes hip hop - what better way to get the attention of 21 second graders first thing in the morning!

The chorus was not only stuck in my head, but also every group I met with!!!!  It went over so well!!!

So gearing up for our weekly quiz we created this anchor chart:

Look at our Mad Exciting Poster!!!

Close ups:

We did so awesome with coming up with different story elements while we worked on Daily 5!  I loved giving them something specific to focus on while they were still doing their respective jobs! I really want to incorporate this Post-It tactic into other areas as well-

how easy is it to check for grades and to make sure every student is understanding?!

Now go watch the video!!!

I also worked on a scientific method/inquiry lesson for next week!  Take a peek and click the pic to head to my TpT store!

The students are sure to love this!!

Technology Resources

Here are some CRAZY AWESOME RESOURCES I've found lately!

Check them out!

COIN BOX

Illuminations game- multiple options for counting, exchanging, etc....

Sometimes introducing or informal assessment, this would be great because you can use the money visually but not actually have to get it out!

\

TEN FRAMEs!

Anyone else doing Investigations?!  Ten frames- once again with multiple ways to play!!!  Great way to explore more in depth and have more discussion about 10 frames.

STORY STARTERS!

Roll parts of story with different categories: fantasy, sci-fi, adventure.

For crazy creative and weird people like me- this is so freaking awesome!!!  I want to leave it up and students can get inspiration if need be. Way easier than making story cubes, or anything else if you ask me!

Story Map

STORY MAPPING

We've been working on planning stories and this website has some great resources to help. Either through characters, or conflict, etc...

Hope you find any of these useful- just some stuff we've been doing that I thought I would pass on ! :)

Descriptive Words FREEBIE

This will be random I apologize (there is a cool FREEBIE at the end though!), I'll first start with my top 5 for student teaching.  I haven't done one in awhile so I thought it would be great to get back to!  I love reflecting on it actually,  realizing how fast it is going by!

My first full week is coming up!

Ok Top 5:

1.  AHA moments! One of our students did fantastic on our math tests, after we had been talking about strategies all week!  Math isn't his strongest subject but he didn't give up, which was awesome to see, and he worked through it!  So proud of him!  It's those moments that make me super beyond excited to be a teacher!

2. Made is through first supervisor visit! Deep breath......check that off the list!  It went off without a hitch.  Even though I wasn't super nervous it was a little weird having someone in the room besides the normal people (especially with me teaching!). Preparing for the principal's visit soon...I suppose.

3. They love breaks as much as we do! Surprise, surprise!  Well I'm moody (I'll admit it, and am working on being more aware).  Students pick up on this, more than we know.  If we're having a bad day, then it tends to get worse because the students know it.  Well on Friday it was kind of the opposite.  I only get to see my fiance about once a month (and I got to see him Friday) so needless to say I was ecstatic and couldn't wait for school to let out!  Well we had 3 tests, and that was a lot!  We took dance breaks and listened to music for the parts of the tests that we could!  It helped me and the students so much to release some energy and get to work!  Check out my brain break page for some  ideas!!

4. I love writing! Of course, my inspiration for stories, involves magical talking ducks, aliens, and other mythical creatures, but I think that really let the kids know to go for it- in writing anyway!  We talked all about planning stories and I'm so excited after reading their plans.  They are so creative and I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT!

5. LOOK AT upcoming weeks aka Pop rocks! We're talking about descriptive words so I made this cool FREEBIE to go with our Pop Rocks we are going to observe- how much fun?!  Click the pic to grab yours!

OU/OW Words, might induce laughter

Can I just say how much fun spelling has been this week?! I have enjoyed every minute of it!

Today we did an awesome activity for the OU spelling pattern! I've seen something similar to this on Pinterest but decided to put my own spin on this and you need very little prep!

Here is a lovely picture of where I put the bandaid on my face! This is the first step!  I did this before class.  Obvious...but not too obvious.

Second-
Here's the "semi" anchor chart we made with all our words! I wanted to a bandaid but that didn't quite happen!

Third- Students had to write what they thought happened to me using our ou/ow words from the board.  I challenged them to see how many words they could fit in their story!

IT WENT AWESOME! Probably my favorite thing so far!

Here are some of our examples: (I'll translate below each picture)
Check them out they are hilarious!!!

"You ran into a cow and fell on the ground and said "ouch." and got off the ground and ran into another cow and fell again and said ouch!

REALLY?! TWO COWS?- COME ON!

"Ms. Haslag fell down on the ground because she was terrified when she saw a cow in the house. and she was never found again."

So I disppeared?!

"I was coming from out of my house and I was heading south and I fell on the ground and hit my mouth and I went back in the house and sat my couch and I watched TV for an hour and I got ran over from a cow. The cow got angry and started to pound."

The student informed their picture was not quite finished....it was supposed to be me on the couch with an angry cow about to get me and me saying "Ahhhhh!!!"

These made me crack up...hope they do for you too! :)

I think I liked it so well because as a student teacher, kids sometimes are as receptive to me early on being in the classroom- this was such a great way to show creativity and be silly and show my fun side as well!

Literally  no prep + creativity galore = one awesome spelling lesson !

Long E FREEBIE!

So I promised pics of Percy so here you go:

He's all in his chrysalis!  Bright green with a few yellow spots and a yellow line near the top.

The students did a great job recording their observations of what is happening with Percy.  They are on the edge of their seats waiting for him/her to become a butterfly....too bad that takes a little while!  :(

Onto what we did today!

We worked on Long E during spelling.  I got the idea for this anchor chart that is all over Pinterest!

I added the different spellings for the long E sound down at the bottom after we identified them in the poem.

We brainstormed some together as a class, then I sent pairs to brainstorm more on their own!  Boy, did they do great! Here are some examples:

MAYBE? Although it shouldn't go in the "Y" category, what an awesome word!  Knee- even spelled correctly!

Library?! - WOOHOO! Pretty cool if you ask me :)

Although I had my students fold and write the categories I whipped up this freebie for you to make it easier if you want to do this in your classroom!  Click below to print your own sorting page!

This was definitely a great way to introduce Long E spellings! The students did great brainstorming words and using environmental texts for clues.
